PSHE and RSE

PSHE and RSE

At Horton Park, we help pupils develop resilience, problem-solving, experiences, communication, vocabulary and mutual respect through the whole school drivers. In PSHE and RSE, we ensure children learn about what makes healthy relationships, focusing on family and friendships (in a way that is age-appropriate and sensitive to faith.)

We teach pupils about equality and diversity in the context of British values and spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. We establish clear links between individuals and the wider world through exploring a range of different scenarios and real-life examples. We develop the characteristics of a responsible citizen who is prepared for making decisions in their daily life.

At Horton Park, we follow the Story Project. The Story Project is a programme that uses high quality children’s books to teach the ‘PSHE’ (Personal, Social, Health, Economic) curriculum. As a class, children read the carefully-curated collection of diverse stories, talk about the themes and then take part in activities linked to the learning.

Horton Park has chosen to use The Story Project to teach the PSHE curriculum. This means that your child will be learning wellbeing skills as well as practising important literacy skills, and fostering a love of reading.

A Diverse Curriculum to Support All Children

The Story Project believes that children need a range of skills and experiences to develop as well-rounded, respectful individuals ready for life beyond primary school.

The Story Project is purposeful in its decision to include books that show a diverse range of people and cultures. They do this so that children foster empathy and understanding for those who are similar and people who are different from themselves.

Their books are thought-provoking and often look at tricky topics such as discrimination or bullying. They are also celebratory of different people, encouraging children to look beyond labels and at the heart of what it means to live happily in our modern world.

Our children’s physical and mental well-being is paramount to their learning and overall success at Horton Park. Children regularly learn about how to keep themselves mentally healthy and this is supported through myHappymind sessions.
